Exfoliation, or the removal of dead skin cells, is an essential part of optimal skin health and appearance. Although healthy skin naturally turns over every three to five weeks, this rate slows as we age and can cause skin to look dull and lifeless. In addition, conditions such as acne can be caused by excess dead skin cell build up. Removing dead cells through spa treatments like microdermabrasion or dermaplaning can regulate cell turnover and keep you skin looking smooth and vibrant throughout the month!
Microdermabrasion removes dead skin cells by gently gliding a diamond encrusted wand over the surface of clean, dry skin. This bumps off any superficial dead cells which are then lightly vacuumed away through the wand. This action can keep certain acnes under control and stimulate collagen production to improve the appearance of scarring and fine lines over time.
Dermaplaning works differently in that it not only removes dead skin cells but also all vellus hair (peach fuzz) from your face. Your clinician will skillfully skim a rounded scalpel blade across each section of your clean face to remove both dead cells and hair, leaving your skin baby soft! This also provides the perfect canvas for a flawless makeup application, making it a favorite of brides.
Immediately after your microdermabrasion or dermaplaning spa treatment, your skin may be slightly flushed. This should subside within 24 hours or less.
Due to the rate of cellular turnover and hair regrowth, it is recommended that you space your treatments three to four weeks apart. Reduction of fine lines, acne scarring, and overall acne can be seen with repeated microdermabrasion treatments, making it a great monthly treatment.
Both dermaplaning and microdermabrasion may also be added onto other spa treatments such as facials to enhance your results.
